Indian textiles become living, structural art in the hands of Vaishali S. The designer has built her global reputation through her signature hand-cording, which sculpts ancient Indian weaves into flowing, 3D wearable art. After making history in 2021 as the first Indian woman designer to exhibit Indian couture at Paris Fashion Week, Vaishali Shadangule returned to the global stage on July 8, 2026. Her presentation at Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week didn’t just showcase garments; it set a profound new benchmark for the power of Indian handlooms.
Being true to her roots, quite literally, Vaishali’s collection titled “Swayam” (स्वयं) is an embodiment of a flower which blooms towards the sky but still stays rooted to the ground. Instead of using modern machinery, the collection brings this philosophy to life by celebrating the raw and unique beauty of handmade craftsmanship.
Every silhouette honoured a language passed down through generations – the art of hand-pleating, folding, and draping unstitched fabric into wearable architecture. The runway itself became a living texture map, weaving together 14 distinct textile traditions, including the dramatic ply-braiding techniques preserved by the nomadic Rabari tribe of Northwestern India.
Showcased at the Residence of the Ambassador of India to France, the collection used heavy silks like Ghicha, Chanderi, and Murshidabad silk to tell an evolutionary story. As the garments moved down the runway, their colors transitioned from stony, quiet neutrals into rich, deep tones of ash, carmine, peacock, and sapphire.
This visual experience was brought to life under the creative vision of Italian art director Marco Ferra and styled with exquisite high jewelry from official partner SICIS Jewellery, the precious gold and micromosaics catching the runway light as the models walked to live Indian classical music. The true emotional anchor of the showcase came as the models walked the runway entirely barefoot to physically connect the clothing to the earth.
