FL: How do you aim to preserve the essence and design philosophy that your mother instilled in the brand while also incorporating your vision?
AD: As a maximalist brand, we have the luxury to blend elements to create unique pieces. Merging my mother’s core aesthetics with my own helps shape my vision for Simar Dugal.
FL: Could you describe the evolution of the Simar Dugal label from its beginning in 2004 to its present state?
AD: The evolution of Simar Dugal since its inception in 2004 has been phenomenal. Initially, it served as a means of sustenance but now, it has evolved into a flourishing design label, transitioning from lighter daywear to more elaborate, wedding-oriented semi-couture pieces while maintaining Simar Dugal’s inherent aesthetic celebrating India’s richness.

AD: Consciously integrating elements from my mother’s design aesthetic, I have retained her use of subtle prints but with a maximalist perspective. Additionally, I have incorporated thread and hand embroidery to enhance the overall look, marrying statement-making prints with intricate thread work.

AD: As a creative director and a designer, of course, the design aspect of the brand is inherently something that I am more drawn towards. But being a student of finance, I do enjoy the financial creativity and financial modelling of the companies as well.
FL: What are the challenges you face in carrying forward the legacy of a renowned fashion figure like Simar Dugal?
AD: Well, the obvious one is that I am not Simar Dugal, and the construct for the label was laid by her as a mainframe. Adapting to that construct and filling in the blanks requires a considerable amount of understanding and research.
FL: Could you share your vision for the future of the Simar Dugal label? Any plans for expansion or new initiatives?
AD: The creative vision and the overall vision for Simar Dugal involves a lot of expansion, particularly foraying into accessories, a sphere close to my heart. However, the details remain a mystery for now.
