Ahead of Time: Rotoris on the new age of Indian Horology

India is currently one of the fastest-growing watch markets in the world, rapidly emerging as a key consumer hub for both luxury timepieces and smartwatches. Widely considered the industry’s “new frontier,” nearly 79% of watch executives now identify the country as one of the most promising markets globally. Despite this surge in demand, much of India’s watch landscape continues to be dominated by international brands.

Against this backdrop is Rotoris, a modern mechanical watch brand founded by Aakash Anand and Prerna Gupta that aims to shift the narrative. With a fresh perspective on horology, the brand is attempting to reimagine what contemporary watchmaking from India can look like. Central to this vision is The Rotoris House – conceived as part atelier and part conversational salon.

“Watches are intimate objects. You can’t understand one through a screen. You need to hold them. Feel the weight. See how light moves across the dial”, the founders reflected.Rotoris believes in building a space that is experiential as it is educational. A space that feels warm and inviting, like walking into your friend’s residence. A place where you can take your time, be curious and  learn about the craft.

Founded by a team with backgrounds spanning entrepreneurship, brand-building and mechanical watchmaking, the brand approaches construction with deliberate restraint. It believes in exposed detailing and performance-led construction. Elements of the movement and case architecture are flaunted with confidence rather than kept hidden, giving the watches a technical, almost architectural quality. This emphasis on transparency reflects a philosophy rooted in mechanical honesty, where the engineering behind the watch becomes part of its visual narrative. Every material, the founder shares, is chosen for a reason – 316L stainless steel for durability, sapphire crystal for protection, and Swiss-grade movements for precision.

What stands out most, however, is the brand’s ambition. To build a mechanical watch brand from India – especially in a field historically dominated by European maisons – is no small undertaking. Yet the founders see their relative newness as an advantage. “We don’t carry the weight of legacy. We don’t have to protect a hundred years of tradition. That gives us freedom to build for the person who exists today”, the founders note.

Rotoris operates on an allocation-led model; choosing a waitlist system over the traditional retail route. The approach begins with limited production – each collection is released in specific numbers. Every watch is linked to a global owner registry, allowing the brand to maintain a clear record of its collectors and ensure tighter control over distribution. The waitlist helps the brand understand who is genuinely interested in its watches, while also creating a sense of anticipation around each release. Over the long run, the brand believes this measured approach will result in something far more enduring than mere quick sales.

Rotoris currently presents a curated lineup of distinct timepieces, each built around a specific philosophy of design, engineering, and lifestyle. The Arvion stands out for its single-hand time display, a design inspired by performance dashboards found in classic sports cars. Monarch leans into architectural elegance and celestial mechanics.Drawing inspiration from modern superyacht engineering, Auriqua emphasises clean geometry and maritime durability. Astonia is Rotoris’ performance chronograph, rooted in motorsport timing instruments. Manifesta places emphasis on material artistry and dial craftsmanship.

When asked which timepiece best represents the brand’s technical prowess, the founder points to the Monarch.“Monarch brings together everything we stand for. A moon phase complication that tracks the lunar cycle with precision. The RSGA02 Automatic Calibre. An exhibition caseback that reveals the movement. All within 316L steel and sapphire crystal. It’s designed for someone who leads. Who understands that time has rhythm beyond just hours and minutes. The moon phase is a reminder of cycles and patience.”

For now, Rotoris is focused on defining what the brand truly stands for – premium craftsmanship, limited production, and a clear, thoughtful philosophy. Building this foundation is essential before any meaningful expansion can take place. In the future, the brand may introduce collections at different entry points, making its watches more accessible to a wider audience. However, the core approach will remain unchanged: prioritising substance over spectacle and quality over volume. Growth, for Rotoris, is not about scaling rapidly but about nurturing a community that values the craft behind each timepiece.

Looking forward, Rotoris plans to deepen the narrative around its existing collections by introducing new colourways, additional complications, and more technically refined iterations of its current timepieces. Collaborations are also on the horizon, particularly with artists and designers who share the brand’s values of craftsmanship and creative integrity. These partnerships aim to bring fresh perspectives to the watches while maintaining Rotoris’ distinctive design language.

At the same time, the brand is developing a new collection designed to serve as an everyday companion for the Rotoris community – a versatile timepiece built with the same rigour and attention to detail, but tailored for daily wear.Beyond watches, Rotoris is also beginning to explore categories outside the wrist, hinting at a broader ecosystem around the brand. The expansion, however, will remain gradual and intentional – reflecting the brand’s commitment to evolving steadily rather than rushing growth.

Through limited production, an allocation-led model, and a growing community of enthusiasts, the brand is quietly reshaping how horology from India can be imagined and experienced. If the early chapters are any indication, Rotoris is not simply building watches – it is building a philosophy around time, craft, and patience. And as the brand evolves, what emerges is not just a new watch label, but a signal that India’s role in global watchmaking may be entering a new chapter.
