FL: Can you share what inspired you to continue your mother’s legacy and take over the Simar Dugal label?
AD: I have known the Simar Dugal label for ten years, and growing up, I was deeply connected to the design principles my mother followed. She actively trained my eye, and I instinctively felt ready to continue her legacy due to this deep connection and shared aesthetic sense.
FL: How do you aim to preserve the essence and design philosophy that your mother instilled in the brand while also incorporating your vision?
AD: As a maximalist brand, we have the luxury to blend elements to create unique pieces. Merging my mother’s core aesthetics with my own helps shape my vision for Simar Dugal.
FL: Could you describe the evolution of the Simar Dugal label from its beginning in 2004 to its present state?
AD: The evolution of Simar Dugal since its inception in 2004 has been phenomenal. Initially, it served as a means of sustenance but now, it has evolved into a flourishing design label, transitioning from lighter daywear to more elaborate, wedding-oriented semi-couture pieces while maintaining Simar Dugal’s inherent aesthetic celebrating India’s richness.
FL: How has the brand’s ethos shifted or remained consistent over the years, particularly after your involvement?
AD: Consciously integrating elements from my mother’s design aesthetic, I have retained her use of subtle prints but with a maximalist perspective. Additionally, I have incorporated thread and hand embroidery to enhance the overall look, marrying statement-making prints with intricate thread work.
FL: Elegant silhouettes along with gota and dabka work are synonymous with the label. What significance do these traditional characteristics hold for the brand?
AD: The significance of traditional characteristics like elegant silhouettes, gota and dabka work lies in their association with the label’s identity which celebrates Indian culture and craftsmanship, while ensuring comfort and elegance.
FL: As a designer and creative director, which side of the business excites you the most?
AD: As a creative director and a designer, of course, the design aspect of the brand is inherently something that I am more drawn towards. But being a student of finance, I do enjoy the financial creativity and financial modelling of the companies as well.
FL: What are the challenges you face in carrying forward the legacy of a renowned fashion figure like Simar Dugal?
AD: Well, the obvious one is that I am not Simar Dugal, and the construct for the label was laid by her as a mainframe. Adapting to that construct and filling in the blanks requires a considerable amount of understanding and research.
FL: Could you share your vision for the future of the Simar Dugal label? Any plans for expansion or new initiatives?
AD: The creative vision and the overall vision for Simar Dugal involves a lot of expansion, particularly foraying into accessories, a sphere close to my heart. However, the details remain a mystery for now.
FL: For brides seeking a blend of traditional and contemporary elements in their wedding attire, what kind of design or details would you recommend incorporating?
AD: Consider choosing your base fabric with heritage roots, and incorporate traditional weaves and embroideries like zardozi or brocade for an individualistic approach to your bridal outfit.
