Sari & the Sisterhood of Sass

An update on the six-yard innovations that are ruling the popularity charts this season, redefining the sari sentiment for millennials and Gen Z.

Every desi fashion enthusiast owns a massive collection of saris. Saris continue to remain a wardrobe staple that has witnessed an evolution of styles and silhouettes and, of course, a shift in sensibilities. From sensual to sexy, from heavy to lightweight, and classic to cocktail, we trace some of the innovations that lend a new lexicon to the grammar of saris and more. We celebrate the diverse and hip moods of the eternal Indian drape, one pleat unfolding at a time.

From colour blocking trends to multi-coloured ones, here’s a look at what’s new and trending in the multiverse of saris. “A sari is an evergreen silhouette that pairs well with every celebration. It is one of the most versatile pieces of clothing, that caters to and resonates with every generation, which is the need of the hour. Every sari has a wonderful story behind it, and makes for the perfect heirloom addition to your wardrobe,” says Delhi-based designer Varun Bahl.

Ahmedabad-based designers Shyamal and Bhumika add, “Pre-stitched saris are hassle-free, easy-to-wear and can be slipped into like a skirt. Paired with a smart blouse and a statement belt, these new-age saris can make heads turn. These saris can also be combined with shirts, jackets and bustiers for a chic minimal look. Throw in a statement belt and it can amp up the entire ensemble, making it perfect for today’s generation, who are always exploring new and inventive ways to style themselves.”

The Standalone Sequins

Glam sequin saris have made a fashionable comeback. The popularity, however, touched its peak when our favourite Bollywood stars started flaunting sequin saris to ensure it became a trendsetter. It requires zero to minimal accessories and, hence, it’s almost effortless to look gorgeous in them. A sequin sari screams “less is more” with its cute go-to cocktail look. Never go overboard with your jewellery and let nothing meddle with its unique exclusivity. Be chic with your makeup. Opt for a nude shade of lipstick and rock some smoky eyes!

The Organza Grace

Created with much dedication, organza is a fantastic fabric that has enjoyed everlasting love through generations. These sheer saris are one of the top favourites for contemporary brides and bridesmaids alike. Their exquisiteness exhibits the grace of European charm blended with our traditional roots. Designers are creating some splendid couture inspired by the Western world and the delicateness of the organza fabric fits right into this space. Floral work on such fabric can elevate the affluence of its look. It is not only favoured by millennials but this sheer drape is a delight even for the elegant elderly. Behind its creation lies a world of supreme subtlety and
luxury.

When Pastels Marry Silks

Channelling the evergreen charm, silk saris are one-of-a-kind and enjoy loyalty among wearers of all age groups. Its silky- smooth touch is suitable for anyone who wants to appreciate their body and is in love with their curves. It suits all Indian skin tones and body shapes. Crafted in pure or chiffon mixed silk, these sensual saris are going to rule the trend charts. The inclusion of romantic pastels-the soft, light hues of all primary colours-into the conventionally rich palette of silk saris has lent to its faster adoption among younger generations.

Already a staple in diverse and contemporary bridal wear collections, brides are clearly obsessed with pastel hues. We have nothing against the bold reds and the flaming oranges, but the soothing pastel hues have surely carved a niche for themselves in the bridal wear spectrum.

The Ombre Quotient

Ombre saris are the ultimate vision of contemporary saris. Imagine a subtle and soothing mint green sari that starts with a brighter appearance and tones down to the end with more of a duskier effect like a dark blue. A spellbinding sari, we would say!

A completely fresh approach to the six-yard drape, these saris are an excellent choice for a friend’s wedding and even for gifting purposes. It comes in fabrics like crepe and georgette. Embroidered ombre saris are also available with various accents like lace and zari work carved on them. These saris would be an added decorative ornament in your wardrobe. Popular with the younger generation, ombre saris encompassing varied hues and designs are a delight for everyone.

Fun with Florals

Floral Saree

When it comes to the latest mood board, floral saris have definitely captured popular and creative imagination. They are nothing short of a masterpiece and are the perfect replacement for the classic drape. These floral designs work well on all fabrics depending on the dress code for the occasion. Chiffon or satin saris with rich floral work on them are a wonderful choice that can help you look glam effortlessly.

If you think a full floral-designed sari is too much to take in, then you can very well try out subtle-fit floral blouses.

The Net Gain

Net saris are not much different from their sequined counterparts but they do have their own charm, which makes everyone go gaga. They are available in various ranges and these versatile designs are not something you will find in any other traditional sari. Inherently apt for cocktail glamour, net saris can be worn across a combination of various fabrics, which will simply uplift your entire look.

The Monotone Club

Saree

A single shade-as powerful as black or red-can make a fashion statement louder than a medley of bolder colours. If your personal style leans towards minimalistic, a monotone sari is your go-to option. It’s classier, tasteful, and fuss-free.

The Romantic Ruffles

The advantage about ruffles is that you don’t need fancy blouses or heavy jewellery to enhance your look. Ruffles have been on our radar for quite some time now, and they’re absolutely dreamy. The layers, the textures, and the flair are all unmatched by any other sari design. Always pick a sequined blouse with a plain ruffled sari.

Metal Mania

If you’re not a big fan of colours, then a metallic sari is just what you need. This sari trend flaunts the brilliance of gold, silver, bronze, and copper on fabrics with ultimate ease. Metallic saris are known for their fluidity, which means that comfort is a guarantee. Moreover, metallic saris allow you to experiment with different styles of draping. These saris can hold their own, so you don’t really need accessories to achieve a complete look.

Thin Borders

Long gone are the days when saris with elaborate borders used to be in vogue. If trends are anything to go by, 2022 is turning out to be the year of thin sari borders. With sophisticated minimalism, thin borders are very good at enhancing your sari’s colour and design. Moreover, the lightweight nature of thin borders makes it easier for you to carry the sari around. The best part is that thin borders pair really well with plain and printed saris alike, making them a rather versatile option. You can choose to decorate your thin borders with anything, so there’s ample room for experimentation. Got a wedding to attend? Wear a sari with thin borders to make a bold fashion statement.

With every year ushering in a new set of fashion trends, 2022 is no exception. When modern ideas meet the culture and tradition that saris bring to the table, you get some unique trends that are a nod to evolving consumer taste. “One of the modern takes on the traditional drape is the pre-stitched sari, which, in effect, is akin to slipping into a skirt with a free- flowing pallu, making it absolutely non-cumbersome and travel-friendly for Gen Z”, says Noida-based designer Seema Gujral. She adds, “The super-trendy, contemporary blouses have taken the traditional sari to a completely modern and glamorous zone.”
