Reinventing Indian Fashion ft. Ritika Mirchandani

Using intricate embroideries on new-age silhouettes, Ritika Mirchandani has created a niche for her aesthetic in today’s occasion wear market, winning the hearts of women who want to stick to tradition while breaking norms. In a candid conversation, we discovered where it all started for the young designer.

FL: Twelve years after your eponymous label was established, it remains a paragon of contemporary fashion for women of all ages. Where did the journey begin?

RM: My journey began at a very young age when I was inspired by watching my mother work in the fashion industry. Since the age of seven, I knew without a doubt that fashion was my calling. I began my fashion career as an intern at Cynthia Rowley and then worked at design houses like Ralph Lauren. These experiences were incredibly insightful and shaped my understanding of the industry. After working for international brands, I set up my label in India, and the rest is history!

FL: How do you balance traditional Indian elements with a more contemporary aesthetic in your collections?

RM: Balancing traditional elements with a contemporary aesthetic is at the heart of my design philosophy. I blend heritage with innovation, making sure each piece reflects Indian culture while appealing to modern tastes. Indian fashion is famous for its intricate embroidery and handwork, which I reimagine with minimalist designs, abstract motifs, and unconventional placements. For sarees and lehengas, I introduce Western influences like structured tailoring, asymmetry and layering techniques, creating avant-garde pieces. By thoughtfully integrating these elements, our collections honour the legacy of Indian fashion while embracing modern design.

FL: Could you elaborate on the significance of Bugel work embroidery in your designs and how it has become a signature element of your label?

RM: Bugel work, known for its intricate beauty and versatility, is a hallmark of my designs. This traditional Indian craft adds depth and authenticity to our modern pieces, honouring heritage craftsmanship. We combine Bugel work with other embellishments like mother of pearl, beads, and thread work for rich textures, making each piece unique. The distinctive sparkle and texture of Bugel have become synonymous with our brand, making it a signature element that our clients love and recognise.

FL: Can you share a memorable moment or experience from your career that has shaped you as a designer?

RM: It is hard to pinpoint a single moment because it’s really the entire journey that shapes you. Each experience, big or small, has contributed to making me the designer I am today. From watching my mother in this profession to my first internship and all the way to establishing my own label, every step has been significant. Whether it’s the thrill of seeing a new collection come to life, the challenges that push me to grow, or the joy of seeing someone wear and love our designs, each of these moments has played a crucial role in my journey. Together, they have moulded my perspective and creativity, and I wouldn’t be the same designer without them.

FL: Finally, what does fashion mean to you personally, and how do you hope your designs impact the fashion world?

RM: Fashion, for me, is all about expressing myself subtly yet deeply. I see fashion as more than keeping up with trends or making bold statements. It is about creating pieces that stand the test of time. It is about appreciating the craftsmanship behind well-made clothes and feeling confident and refined when you put them on. Because to me, fashion isn’t just about what you wear; it’s about how it makes you feel and the confidence it brings to your stride.
