The mastermind behind The Wedding Filmer, Vishal Punjabi, has turned ordinary nuptials into extraordinary visual odysseys. In this exclusive interview with First Look, we sat down with the storyteller himself to delve deeper into his world of cinematic wedding storytelling.

In the world of weddings, where moments are fleeting, yet emotions run deep, few can tell the tale quite like Vishal Punjabi. As the creative genius behind The Wedding Filmer, Vishal has not only chronicled some of India’s most high-profile nuptials but he’s also redefined how we experience these personal moments on screen. However, his journey to becoming India’s most sought-after wedding filmmaker has been anything but linear. It’s a story that spans continents, careers, and a few life-altering twists along the way.

Vishal’s early foray into filmmaking was far removed from weddings. He began his career at Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment, working on large-scale Bollywood productions that offered him the best of everything. “Bollywood spoils you,” he recalls. “You get the best cameras, crews, and locations.” However, a turning point came when he had to leave India and return to Ghana, his birthplace. “There was no film industry in Ghana – no cameramen, no sound engineers, nothing. I had to figure out everything on my own,” he says.

When he finally returned to India after two years, his passion for storytelling found a new muse: weddings. “I came back to this massive Bollywood project, Ra.One, but something had changed in me. I’d written this love story based on a wedding and wanted to shoot it.” What started as a personal project, filming his wedding for research, led him into the world of wedding filmmaking. “I thought it would help with character development for my film,” he says. After his wedding, Vishal shot a few more, with each one opening doors to a deeper connection with the couples and their stories.

“It’s raw, unfiltered emotion… The joy of editing, giving the couple their story back, and seeing their reaction was more fulfilling than anything I had done before. I fell in love with the process of shooting weddings.” That authenticity, combined with his storytelling prowess, birthed The Wedding Filmer. Gone were the days of monotonous, formulaic wedding videos. Vishal’s cinematic approach weaved together emotion, dialogue, and bespoke music to craft films that felt alive. His work broke the mould with Heartbeats, a wedding film that took the internet by storm with over 33 million views. “It was a game-changer,” Vishal reflects. “We had to get a studio overnight; the phone didn’t stop ringing. Suddenly, everyone wanted their wedding filmed like a movie.”

The Wedding Filmer gained momentum and captured some of India’s most celebrated unions, from the intimate Tuscan wedding of Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli to the Lake Como vows of Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh. But for Vishal, the essence of his work never changed. “After shooting with Shah Rukh Khan, nothing intimidates you,” he laughs. “At the end of the day, every wedding is about two people in love, and that’s what I focus on. It doesn’t matter if you’re shooting in Tuscany or Patna – every love story is unique, and that’s what makes it special.”

He fondly recalls the intimacy of one of the celebrity weddings he’s filmed. “With Virat and Anushka’s wedding, it was incredibly small, just about 40 people. We were in Tuscany, and it was so minimal, so intimate. It wasn’t about the grandeur – it was about love. That’s why it resonated with so many people.”

Perhaps one of Vishal’s most significant contributions to the world of wedding films is his use of original music composed specifically for each couple. “Music is what ties it all together. It brings out the emotion in a way that visuals alone can’t,” he muses. A prime example is Peer Vi Tu, a song he created for Anushka and Virat’s wedding, which quickly became an anthem for couples. “People hadn’t even seen the full trailer but were already hooked on the song. That’s the power of music.”

“Every memory needs a melody.”

He shares a touching anecdote about a bride from a wedding he shot a decade ago. “I made a song for her wedding, and now she sings that song to her daughter as a lullaby. When her daughter gets married, that’s the song they’ll dance to. That’s the power of what we do.”

For Vishal, wedding filmmaking is as much about the people as the craft. This authenticity is mirrored in his office – a quaint bungalow by the sea in Mumbai. A wooden dining table where his team gathers for lunch reflects the warm, communal spirit that drives The Wedding Filmer.

“You can’t script a wedding. You can’t recreate those raw, emotional moments. That’s what makes it even more beautiful than fiction. The things people say and how they feel – it’s real and powerful.”

Despite the glamour of celebrity weddings, Vishal’s own wedding story is refreshingly grounded. After meeting his now-wife, Nikki, at her sister’s wedding, love again serendipitously entered his life.  Their own wedding was intimate, with only 20 guests. “No big events, no sangeet, no massive setups – just our closest family and friends. My crew, who are also my best friends, shot it. They were part of the wedding. It was beautiful in its simplicity.”

As the conversation drifts towards the future, Vishal reflects on the evolution of wedding filmmaking. “We’ve come a long way since we started. We’re shooting in 4K, using drones, stabilisers, 360-degree cameras, and iPhones.” Regardless of AI making strides, Vishal believes that human touch will always be essential in capturing weddings. “You can’t replace the human eye or heart. AI can help with editing, sure, but it will never be able to capture the emotion of a bride walking down the aisle or a father’s tears as he gives away his daughter. That’s something only a human can do.”

“Weddings will always be about love, and as long as there’s love, there will be stories worth telling.”

Vishal’s passion for wedding filmmaking is contagious, and it’s clear that for him, this isn’t just a job – it’s an extension of who he is. As we wrapped up the interview, we couldn’t help but feel inspired by the space, the man behind the lens, and the stories he’s told. Through The Wedding Filmer, he has set a new benchmark in capturing love stories, creating timeless films that transcend the fleeting nature of the celebrations they depict.
