She encapsulates individuality, history and uniqueness through her designs. She is known for her use of dramatic elements that make the wearer look a class apart in the crowd. And she clearly has us fascinated by her creations.
On the 27th of April 2019, Pernia’s Pop-Up Studio, Bandra presented an exclusive preview of Disha Kahai’s latest collection ‘Fallen Angel’. Aesthetically, the collection is designed to depict the Greys between Evil and Good with contemporary silhouettes in black and white.
We sat down with her to talk about her inspirations, how she perceives the ‘Disha Kahai’ girl and her future aspirations.
What is Disha Kahai Label about? What is the USP of the brand?
The label comprises of two verticals: Disha Kahai Couture and Disha Kahai Pret.
The ‘Couture wear’ collection consists of indo-western designs with a contemporary twist. The ensembles are glamorous and dramatic in soft and mellow tones. Here some elements are inspired from certain eras such as the Elizabethan with emphasis on the collars, cuffs and shoulders. The silhouettes are modern with sensual cuts making it the perfect fusion wear for cocktails and wedding occasions.
The ‘Prêt-à-porter’ collection consists of western designs that are edgy and chic. The current inspiration is a blend of heavy metal and gothic eras in hues of black and white. The monochrome collection features day to evening looks. It also comprises of heels that compliment the outfits to complete the look. Was there ever a wardrobe without black or white?

How do you envision the Disha Kahai girl?
The Disha Kahai girl is dauntless. She lives life well rounded. She is confident in her skin and can pull off a bold and sensual or a conservative outfit at ease.
Where does your inspiration come from?
Inspired by fashion from different eras whilst studying at the London college of fashion, I merge some of the details that I’m drawn to with contemporary silhouettes. My designs are distinct and dramatic. I design based on my own interpretation of these eras and make use of certain elements to add a quotient of style to an otherwise simple silhouette.
Can you tell us a little about the ‘Fallen Angel’ collection?
Inspired from what I’ve seen in various women when they are faced with unexpected challenges and take them on with grace and valour; the fallen angel collection is about the women who are fierce, wild and unapologetically themselves.

What is the best advice you can share with someone trying to get into designing?
Be true to the peacock in you.
What’s next for you? Do you have your next collection planned out?
My end goal is to become a product designer and I’m planning to launch another vertical very soon. I want the Disha Kahai brand to be a one-stop shop for clothes, shoes and clutches where we could offer products for every occasion.
